DESCRIPTION:As a member of the Malden community (past or present)\, you are invited to be part of the Malden Mass. Memories Road Show taking place on Saturday\, April 27\, from 10am – 3pm at the Malden Senior / Teen Community Center. \n\n\n\nMalden Reads is leading the local planning team in collaboration with UMass Boston Healey Library and partnering with the City of Malden\, Urban Media Arts and the Malden Public Library. \n\n\n\nABOUT\n\n\n\nThe Mass. Memories Road Show is a public history project that digitizes and archives personal photographs and stories shared by the people of Massachusetts.  \n\n\n\nThis event-based\, participatory program is coordinated through the Joseph P. Healey Library at UMass Boston in collaboration with local planning groups in communities throughout the Commonwealth. \n\n\n\nSince its launch in 2004\, the Mass. Memories Road Show has digitized more than 12\,000 photographs and stories from across the state\, creating an educational resource of primary sources for future generations. You can view that archive here. \n\n\n\nHOW TO PARTICIPATE\n\n\n\nHelp spread the word! Bring your family\, friends\, neighbors\, community groups\, constituents\, clients and customers. The more people who participate\, the more accurate is the “snapshot” recorded of our community’s history.  \n\n\n\nDecide on three photographs that have special meaning to you. Bring them to the event on April 27\, 2024. They can be hard copy or digital.  \n\n\n\nAt the event\, you will have the opportunity to share the story behind the photo and have your memories recorded for Malden’s historical archive. \n\n\n\nThere will be other things to see and do at this community event. Malden Reads and Urban Media Arts are planning special activities that celebrate the stories of our community. The event will also celebrate the 375th anniversary of the city of Malden through fun activities\, presentations and exhibits. \n\n\n\nWhether you are a newcomer to the city or have lived here all your life\, YOUR story is important to our community’s evolving history. \n\n\n\nALL THE DETAILS\n\n\n\nFor COMPLETE INFORMATION about this event\, please visit the UMA web page: https://urbanmediaarts.org/malden-mass-memories-road-show/

SUMMARY:Justice Denied: A Talk by Margie Yamamoto
DESCRIPTION:Margie Yamamoto will share personal family stories from the Japanese-American internment during WWII.\n\n\n\nMalden Reads\, in collaboration with the Malden Public Library\, is pleased to present a talk by Margie Yamamoto on Saturday\, April 29\, from 2 – 4pm entitled Justice Denied: A Personal Perspective. Yamamoto recently retired as co-president of the New England Chapter of the Japanese American Citizens League\, a national human rights and educational organization.  \n\n\n\nJustice Denied tells the story of the Japanese incarceration during World War II as seen through the eyes of Yamamoto’s Japanese American family. Yamamoto was two months old when her family entered the American internment camps. It follows her family’s passage from immigration in the1890s through their imprisonment during the war years and documents how they rebuilt their lives thereafter. The 45-minute presentation is richly illustrated with more than 100 family and historic WWII photographs\, many of the latter obtained from U.S. government archives. \n\n\n\nBeyond describing the internment experiences of a single family\, the talk focuses on the plight of the 120\,000 Japanese — two thirds of them American citizens — who were imprisoned\, sometimes for years\, by a Presidential order deemed by many then and now to be in violation of the United States Constitution. \n\n\n\nFor audiences not familiar with the details of the WWII Japanese incarceration\, this story will serve as a primer on one of America’s darker historic moments as well as its efforts in later years to compensate those who suffered through it. This year’s Malden Reads book selection\, They Called Us Enemy by George Takei\, is a graphic memoir which tells the story of Takei’s family experience of the internment camps during WWII. \n\n\n\nMargie is retired after more than 40 years in the marketing and communications fields. Before retirement\, she was Director of Community Program Initiatives at WGBH\, Boston’s public broadcasting station. She has also worked for Walt Disney Productions\, General Electric and a number of education and healthcare organizations in New York\, California and Massachusetts.Yamamoto still serves on the Board of the New England Chapter of the Japanese American Citizens League. She has also served on the boards of the Japan Society of Boston and the Cambridge Center for Adult Education. She has also served on advisory committees for the PBS Adult Learning Service and the Institute for Asian American Studies\, UMass Boston. \n\n\n\nLight refreshments will be served following the presentation. \n\n\n\nRSVPs appreciated. Email maldenreads@gmail.com and let us know you will be attending. \n\n\n\nAt the Malden Public Library\, 36 Salem St.

SUMMARY:Virtual Book Discussion w/Felicia & Chris
DESCRIPTION:Join a thoughtful book discussion online (later to be made into a podcast) with Chris Hickey (left) and Felicia Ryan (right)\n\n\n\nJoin a book discussion with Chris Hickey\, facilitator of the Malden Writer’s Collaborative\, and Felicia Ryan\, writer and host of the Hi Felicia! podcast. \n\n\n\n“Can it happen again? Are we doomed to repeat our history?” \n\n\n\nWriters love books because they give us windows into other worlds — some real or imaginary. These two writers will host a facilitated discussion of the 2023 Malden Read’s book selection “They Called Us Enemy” by George Takei. Together with the participants\, they will explore the many rich themes of family\, history\, and perspective done through a timeless black and white graphic novel.  \n\n\n\nWe will explore: \n\n\n\n\nHow is the graphic novel as a format a useful way of re-telling painful history or apocalyptic fiction?\n\n\n\n\n\nWe can ask the question “Why does history repeat?”\n\n\n\n\n\nWho is “They” and “Us” in this story? How does making someone the “other” de-humanize them?\n\n\n\n\n\nWhat effect does telling the story in black and white have on the reader?\n\n\n\n\n\nWhich character(s) do you most emphasize with? And why?\n\n\n\n\n\nWhat is a particularly poignant or moving scene you remember?\n\n\n\n\n\nDid you learn anything new from reading this story that you didn’t already know?\n\n\n\n\nThe discussion will be online via Zoom and recorded as a podcast as well. You must register in advance at this link. \n\n\n\nQuestions/comments can be submitted in advance for discussion by emailing maldenwriters@gmail.com

SUMMARY:Workshop: Unlearn to Relearn - Breaking Down Systemic Racism
DESCRIPTION:As part of the Malden Reads 2021 program\, Malden Reads is collaborating with Malden Community Organizing for Racial Equity (MaldenCORE) and the City of Malden to host a free 4-part-virtual workshop about unpacking systemic racism in the United States. \nWorkshop participants will be asked to read and reflect on the book “Me and White Supremacy: Combat Racism\, Change the World\, and Become a Good Ancestor” by Layla F. Saad. The book is divided into 28 short chapters with reflection questions at the end of each chapter. In the chapters\, Saad discusses her lived experiences of racism as a result of her intersectional identities and the ways readers can dismantle forms of oppression toward communities of color. \nThe 4-part workshop will be led by Bwann Kellie Gwann\, Assistant Director of the Urban Scholars Initiative at Lesley University. The workshop will help participants who are actively reading the book gain a deeper understanding of systemic racism in the United States through dialogue\, case study review\, and small group activities. There will be four 90-minute workshop session from 7-8:30 pm over Zoom on: \n-Thursday\, March 11th-Thursday\, March 25th -Thursday\, April 15th-Thursday\, April 29th \nThe workshop will cover many topics\, including how Black\, Indigenous\, and People of Color (BIPOC) communities in the United States have been historically oppressed and different racial groups’ roles in dismantling white supremacy. The book is primarily framed as a learning experience for white people and people of color with light complexion. However\, people of all racial\, ethnic\, and cultural backgrounds are also encouraged to participate in and apply for the workshop. \nThis workshop is available only to people who live or work in Malden\, are involved in a Malden organization\, or have some other connection to the Malden community. The workshop is most appropriate for adults and mature high school students. The workshop will be held in English. \nParticipants will be asked to attend all four workshop sessions and actively engage in the reading. Participants will likely need 1-3 hours each week from March 4 through April 29 to read and journal about the assigned chapters in “Me and White Supremacy.” \nMalden Public Library carries physical copies and has downloadable e-book and audiobook options available through Overdrive here. \nRegistration for this workshop has closed.

SUMMARY:Mass Memories Road Show
DESCRIPTION:As a member of the Malden community (past or present)\, YOU are invited to be part of the Malden Mass. Memories Road Show coming to Malden on April 27\, 2024 at the Malden Senior / Teen Community Center.\nMalden Reads is leading the local planning team in collaboration with the UMass Boston Healey Library and partnering with the City of Malden\, Urban Media Arts and the Malden Public Library\, to bring this road show to Malden!\n\n\nABOUT\n\n\n\n\nThe Mass. Memories Road Show is a public history project that digitizes and archives personal photographs and stories shared by the people of Massachusetts.  \nThis event-based\, participatory program is coordinated through the Joseph P. Healey Library at UMass Boston in collaboration with local planning groups in communities throughout the Commonwealth. \nSince its launch in 2004\, the Mass. Memories Road Show has digitized more than 12\,000 photographs and stories from across the state\, creating an educational resource of primary sources for future generations. You can view that archive here. \n\n\nHOW TO PARTICIPATE\n\n\n\n\nHelp spread the word! Bring your family\, friends\, neighbors\, community groups\, constituents\, clients and customers. The more people who participate\, the more accurate is the “snapshot” recorded of our community’s history.  \nDecide on three photographs that have special meaning to you. Bring them to the event on April 27\, 2024. They can be hard copy or digital.  \nAt the event\, you will have the opportunity to share the story behind the photo and have your memories recorded for Malden’s historical archive. \nThere will be other things to see and do at this community event. Malden Reads and Urban Media Arts are planning special activities that celebrate the stories of our community. The event will also celebrate the 375th anniversary of the city of Malden through fun activities\, presentations and exhibits. \nWhether you are a newcomer to the city or have lived here all your life\, YOUR story is important to our community’s evolving history. \nHOW TO HELP\nIf you represent a community organization\, please help spread the word! \nYou can also sign up to volunteer for the event by emailing Malden Reads committee member Karen Phillips at karenjphillips1@gmail.com.   \n\n\nFor more information and updates about this event\, visit our main Malden Mass.
