SUMMARY:Film Screening & Discussion
DESCRIPTION:Please join us for the Malden Reads Film Screening and discussion about William And The Windmill. We will be showing this film at the Malden Public Library on Wednesday\, March 26\, 2025: 6:00-8:00pm. This documentary explores the life of William Kamkwamba\, author of the book\, The Boy Who Harnessed The Wind\, Malden Reads’ 2025 selection. \n\n\n\n“With only a library book as his guide\, 14-year-old William Kamkwamba builds a windmill in his Malawian village that changes his life forever. Using junk parts and an inexhaustible imagination\, he harnesses enough energy to power a generator that saves his family from famine and resuscitates his dying farming community. An instant media sensation\, the teen soon has the ability to chart a previously unimaginable future of TEDtalks\, Ivy League schools\, and speaking tours. But despite the help of an American entrepreneur who helps navigate his success\, some changes threaten to capsize him. He was once just a kid back home\, but suddenly he’s a village leader.” William And The Windmill is directed by Ben Nabors. The film is Not Rated (97 min.) (2013). \n\n\n\nPick up a copy of the book\, The Boy Who Harnessed The Wind\, at the Malden Public Library or find the digital copy on Libby. \n\n\n\nFor more details about our Malden Reads Film Screening & Discussion\, please contact the Malden Public Library at 781-324-0218. Light refreshments will be served. This event is co-sponsored by Malden Reads and Malden Public Library.

SUMMARY: 2025 Kickoff Event
DESCRIPTION:Malden Reads is thrilled to announce the kickoff of our 2025 season! This year’s community read selection is The Boy Who Harnessed the Wind by William Kamkwamba. Set in drought-stricken Malawi\, this inspiring true story follows a young boy who\, despite incredible obstacles\, used his ingenuity to bring electricity and water to his village. Through his determination and resourcefulness\, William Kamkwamba harnessed the power of wind energy to create life-changing solutions for his community. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nWe are proud to partner with Bread of Life\, a vital food security organization that provides over 1.5 million pounds of free food annually to families\, individuals\, youth\, and seniors in the metro-Boston north area. \n\n\n\nAt this kickoff event\, local groups will showcase how they’re using resources to foster sustainability and innovation within our community. These efforts align with the themes of The Boy Who Harnessed the Wind\, including water conservation\, gardening for food security\, and teaching science to the next generation. The kickoff event will also include live music\, poetry\, a variety of refreshments\, and a short presentation.  \n\n\n\nMalden Reads invites you to join us in this shared reading journey and kickoff event\, reflecting on William Kamkwamba’s story and its relevance to our own lives. Together\, we’ll explore ways to bring positive change to Malden and beyond\, supporting both human and environmental well-being. \n\n\n\nLimited parking will be available as follows: 1) On-street parking; 2) Ferry Street parking lot along the bike path; 3) Sacred Hearts Church parking spots marked with a cross in Central Plaza lot at 219 Centre Street (others will be ticketed). \n\n\n\nWe look forward to involving the whole community in our 15th year anniversary program year. The Boy Who Harnessed the Wind is the title of all three editions of the Malden Reads selection for 2025: the adult edition\, the young readers edition\, as well as the picture book. Malden Reads events will discuss the themes of the books\, and readers may choose among the different editions. We consider the young readers edition to be an engaging and accessible read for all ages\, including adults.

SUMMARY:Malden Mass. Memories Road Show
DESCRIPTION:As a member of the Malden community (past or present)\, you are invited to be part of the Malden Mass. Memories Road Show taking place on Saturday\, April 27\, from 10am – 3pm at the Malden Senior / Teen Community Center. \n\n\n\nMalden Reads is leading the local planning team in collaboration with UMass Boston Healey Library and partnering with the City of Malden\, Urban Media Arts and the Malden Public Library. \n\n\n\nABOUT\n\n\n\nThe Mass. Memories Road Show is a public history project that digitizes and archives personal photographs and stories shared by the people of Massachusetts.  \n\n\n\nThis event-based\, participatory program is coordinated through the Joseph P. Healey Library at UMass Boston in collaboration with local planning groups in communities throughout the Commonwealth. \n\n\n\nSince its launch in 2004\, the Mass. Memories Road Show has digitized more than 12\,000 photographs and stories from across the state\, creating an educational resource of primary sources for future generations. You can view that archive here. \n\n\n\nHOW TO PARTICIPATE\n\n\n\nHelp spread the word! Bring your family\, friends\, neighbors\, community groups\, constituents\, clients and customers. The more people who participate\, the more accurate is the “snapshot” recorded of our community’s history.  \n\n\n\nDecide on three photographs that have special meaning to you. Bring them to the event on April 27\, 2024. They can be hard copy or digital.  \n\n\n\nAt the event\, you will have the opportunity to share the story behind the photo and have your memories recorded for Malden’s historical archive. \n\n\n\nThere will be other things to see and do at this community event. Malden Reads and Urban Media Arts are planning special activities that celebrate the stories of our community. The event will also celebrate the 375th anniversary of the city of Malden through fun activities\, presentations and exhibits. \n\n\n\nWhether you are a newcomer to the city or have lived here all your life\, YOUR story is important to our community’s evolving history. \n\n\n\nALL THE DETAILS\n\n\n\nFor COMPLETE INFORMATION about this event\, please visit the UMA web page: https://urbanmediaarts.org/malden-mass-memories-road-show/

SUMMARY:Justice Denied: A Talk by Margie Yamamoto
DESCRIPTION:Margie Yamamoto will share personal family stories from the Japanese-American internment during WWII.\n\n\n\nMalden Reads\, in collaboration with the Malden Public Library\, is pleased to present a talk by Margie Yamamoto on Saturday\, April 29\, from 2 – 4pm entitled Justice Denied: A Personal Perspective. Yamamoto recently retired as co-president of the New England Chapter of the Japanese American Citizens League\, a national human rights and educational organization.  \n\n\n\nJustice Denied tells the story of the Japanese incarceration during World War II as seen through the eyes of Yamamoto’s Japanese American family. Yamamoto was two months old when her family entered the American internment camps. It follows her family’s passage from immigration in the1890s through their imprisonment during the war years and documents how they rebuilt their lives thereafter. The 45-minute presentation is richly illustrated with more than 100 family and historic WWII photographs\, many of the latter obtained from U.S. government archives. \n\n\n\nBeyond describing the internment experiences of a single family\, the talk focuses on the plight of the 120\,000 Japanese — two thirds of them American citizens — who were imprisoned\, sometimes for years\, by a Presidential order deemed by many then and now to be in violation of the United States Constitution. \n\n\n\nFor audiences not familiar with the details of the WWII Japanese incarceration\, this story will serve as a primer on one of America’s darker historic moments as well as its efforts in later years to compensate those who suffered through it. This year’s Malden Reads book selection\, They Called Us Enemy by George Takei\, is a graphic memoir which tells the story of Takei’s family experience of the internment camps during WWII. \n\n\n\nMargie is retired after more than 40 years in the marketing and communications fields. Before retirement\, she was Director of Community Program Initiatives at WGBH\, Boston’s public broadcasting station. She has also worked for Walt Disney Productions\, General Electric and a number of education and healthcare organizations in New York\, California and Massachusetts.Yamamoto still serves on the Board of the New England Chapter of the Japanese American Citizens League. She has also served on the boards of the Japan Society of Boston and the Cambridge Center for Adult Education. She has also served on advisory committees for the PBS Adult Learning Service and the Institute for Asian American Studies\, UMass Boston. \n\n\n\nLight refreshments will be served following the presentation. \n\n\n\nRSVPs appreciated. Email maldenreads@gmail.com and let us know you will be attending. \n\n\n\nAt the Malden Public Library\, 36 Salem St.

DESCRIPTION:“Oe no Chisato” by Utagawa Kunisada\, woodblock print – collection of the Malden Public Library\n\n\n\n\n\nDora St. Martin\, Director of the Malden Public Library\, will present a talk and tour of the Converse Art Galleries and the library’s stunning collection of Japanese ukiyo-e prints purchased in the early 1900s.   \n\n\n\nThe collection includes woodblock prints by the Japanese artists Katsushika Hokusai\, Utagawa Hiroshige\, Utagawa and more.   \n\n\n\nThe woodblock ukiyo-e prints show images of everyday Japan and were mass-produced for popular consumption in the Edo period (1615-1868).  Brought to Europe and America\, these prints influenced many Western artists\, including Monet and Van Gogh; as well as the creators of our popular manga and anime series.   \n\n\n\nAmong the treasured prints exhibited are works by Katsushika Hokusai\, best known for his work “Great Wave off the Coast of Kanagawa” or “The Great Wave” from his series Thirty-six Views of Mount Fuji.   \n\n\n\nThose interested in Japanese prints can also check out the new exhibition at the Museum of Fine Arts Boston “Hokusai: Inspiration and Influence” running from March 26 thru July 16\, 2023. \n\n\n\nAt the Malden Public Library – Converse Memorial Building
