SUMMARY:Justice Denied: A Talk by Margie Yamamoto
DESCRIPTION:Margie Yamamoto will share personal family stories from the Japanese-American internment during WWII.\n\n\n\nMalden Reads\, in collaboration with the Malden Public Library\, is pleased to present a talk by Margie Yamamoto on Saturday\, April 29\, from 2 – 4pm entitled Justice Denied: A Personal Perspective. Yamamoto recently retired as co-president of the New England Chapter of the Japanese American Citizens League\, a national human rights and educational organization.  \n\n\n\nJustice Denied tells the story of the Japanese incarceration during World War II as seen through the eyes of Yamamoto’s Japanese American family. Yamamoto was two months old when her family entered the American internment camps. It follows her family’s passage from immigration in the1890s through their imprisonment during the war years and documents how they rebuilt their lives thereafter. The 45-minute presentation is richly illustrated with more than 100 family and historic WWII photographs\, many of the latter obtained from U.S. government archives. \n\n\n\nBeyond describing the internment experiences of a single family\, the talk focuses on the plight of the 120\,000 Japanese — two thirds of them American citizens — who were imprisoned\, sometimes for years\, by a Presidential order deemed by many then and now to be in violation of the United States Constitution. \n\n\n\nFor audiences not familiar with the details of the WWII Japanese incarceration\, this story will serve as a primer on one of America’s darker historic moments as well as its efforts in later years to compensate those who suffered through it. This year’s Malden Reads book selection\, They Called Us Enemy by George Takei\, is a graphic memoir which tells the story of Takei’s family experience of the internment camps during WWII. \n\n\n\nMargie is retired after more than 40 years in the marketing and communications fields. Before retirement\, she was Director of Community Program Initiatives at WGBH\, Boston’s public broadcasting station. She has also worked for Walt Disney Productions\, General Electric and a number of education and healthcare organizations in New York\, California and Massachusetts.Yamamoto still serves on the Board of the New England Chapter of the Japanese American Citizens League. She has also served on the boards of the Japan Society of Boston and the Cambridge Center for Adult Education. She has also served on advisory committees for the PBS Adult Learning Service and the Institute for Asian American Studies\, UMass Boston. \n\n\n\nLight refreshments will be served following the presentation. \n\n\n\nRSVPs appreciated. Email maldenreads@gmail.com and let us know you will be attending. \n\n\n\nAt the Malden Public Library\, 36 Salem St.

SUMMARY:Talk Baseball with Steve Kluger
DESCRIPTION:It’s Spring in New England\, and that means mud\, occasionally snow\, and baseball. To talk all thingsbaseball\, including his efforts to restore the baseball field at Manzanar Internment Camp\, Malden Readsis pleased to host best-selling author and baseball enthusiast\, Steve Kluger.Kluger\, author of several books including Last Days of Summer and Changing Pitches\, will visit theMalden Public Library on Thursday\, April 6\, 2023 at 7 pm. to discuss baseball\, the Red Sox\, and hisinvolvement in lobbying the US Government to restore the baseball field at Manzanar Internment Campin Manzanar\, CA.In the aftermath of Japan’s bombing of Pearl Harbor\, the U.S. government ordered 120\,000 JapaneseAmericans to be imprisoned in hastily built camps. They were given 48 hours to sell their homes\,businesses\, and possessions and were able to take only what they could carry—typically two suitcasesper adult. These camps were surrounded by barbed wire\, equipped with search lights\, and patrolled byarmed guards. Japanese-American citizens’ draft eligibility was reassigned as 4C\, enemy alien status\, inthe process. They Called Us Enemy by actor/author/activist George Takei\, the Malden Reads selection for our 13thseason\, takes place during these years. This book is a memoir of Mr. Takei’s youth while incarceratedduring WWII in an internment camp\, and tells not only his personal story\, but chronicles a difficult timein American history.Life in the camps was hard and people were looking for distractions to keep their spirits up. Baseball hadbeen introduced in Japan in the 1870’s and was very popular there as in America. Baseball teams wereformed within seven of these camps and four of the teams were able to travel to play each other.“Without baseball\, camp life would have been miserable\,” said George Omachi\, a prisoner who laterbecame a scout for Major League Baseball. In 2000\, although the Department of the Interior began restoring Manzanar as a historic landmark\, thisproject did not include the renovation of the baseball field. Mr. Kluger joined a group lobbying the U.S.government to begin that restoration process that was approved in 2022. To quote Mr. Kluger\, “Amemorial to Manzanar without its baseball diamond is like the Pledge of Allegiance without theflag…baseball was perhaps one of the few aspects of the lives they’d led prior to incarceration that theywere allowed to keep with them after everything else had been taken away. The inclusion of a diamondmight achieve what reparations alone couldn’t facilitate: healing.”This talk is free to the public and will be held at the Malden Public Library’s Converse Art Galleries from7-8 pm with a Q&A following. Light refreshments will be served.

SUMMARY:Stories Only YOU Can Tell
DESCRIPTION:“Memory is the diary we all carry about with us.” — Oscar Wilde \n\n\n\nWe all have a story to tell and the sharing of personal stories allows us to realize our common humanity\, bridge differences\, experience meaningful connection and build community. In George Takei’s graphic memoir\, “They Called Us Enemy\,” \n\n\n\nUrban Media Arts in collaboration with Malden Reads is pleased to present another workshop experience by acclaimed local author\, poet\, spoken word performance artist and instructor CD Collins. \n\n\n\nIn this 5-session workshop (offered remotely via Zoom)\, participants will explore their roots and family legacies through in-class exercises and sharing. Several media forms will be explored\, including traditional narrative\, poetry and even songwriting. Each participant will create a final presentation\, choosing one of these forms. SUMMARY:Virtual Book Discussion w/Felicia & Chris
DESCRIPTION:Join a thoughtful book discussion online (later to be made into a podcast) with Chris Hickey (left) and Felicia Ryan (right)\n\n\n\nJoin a book discussion with Chris Hickey\, facilitator of the Malden Writer’s Collaborative\, and Felicia Ryan\, writer and host of the Hi Felicia! podcast. \n\n\n\n“Can it happen again? Are we doomed to repeat our history?” \n\n\n\nWriters love books because they give us windows into other worlds — some real or imaginary. These two writers will host a facilitated discussion of the 2023 Malden Read’s book selection “They Called Us Enemy” by George Takei. Together with the participants\, they will explore the many rich themes of family\, history\, and perspective done through a timeless black and white graphic novel.  \n\n\n\nWe will explore: \n\n\n\n\nHow is the graphic novel as a format a useful way of re-telling painful history or apocalyptic fiction?\n\n\n\n\n\nWe can ask the question “Why does history repeat?”\n\n\n\n\n\nWho is “They” and “Us” in this story? How does making someone the “other” de-humanize them?\n\n\n\n\n\nWhat effect does telling the story in black and white have on the reader?\n\n\n\n\n\nWhich character(s) do you most emphasize with? And why?\n\n\n\n\n\nWhat is a particularly poignant or moving scene you remember?\n\n\n\n\n\nDid you learn anything new from reading this story that you didn’t already know?\n\n\n\n\nThe discussion will be online via Zoom and recorded as a podcast as well. You must register in advance at this link. \n\n\n\nQuestions/comments can be submitted in advance for discussion by emailing maldenwriters@gmail.com
