SUMMARY:Stories Only YOU Can Tell
DESCRIPTION:“Memory is the diary we all carry about with us.” — Oscar Wilde \n\n\n\nWe all have a story to tell and the sharing of personal stories allows us to realize our common humanity\, bridge differences\, experience meaningful connection and build community. In George Takei’s graphic memoir\, “They Called Us Enemy\,” \n\n\n\nUrban Media Arts in collaboration with Malden Reads is pleased to present another workshop experience by acclaimed local author\, poet\, spoken word performance artist and instructor CD Collins. \n\n\n\nIn this 5-session workshop (offered remotely via Zoom)\, participants will explore their roots and family legacies through in-class exercises and sharing. Several media forms will be explored\, including traditional narrative\, poetry and even songwriting. Each participant will create a final presentation\, choosing one of these forms. A diversity of language expression is encouraged – participants can present poetry\, song or short form narrative in their native language with translation provided for the final presentation. \n\n\n\nA public performance will be planned for Malden PorchFest on Saturday\, June 10. \n\n\n\nA commitment to the 5-session workshop and final performance is required. The nominally-priced workshop fee can be waived if it presents a financial hardship. Contact Anne at anne@umaverse.org. \n\n\n\nThis project is supported in part by a grant from the Malden Cultural Council\, a local agency\, supported through the Massachusetts Cultural Council\, a state agency. \n\n\n\nTuesdays\, March 21\, 28\, April 4\, 11\, & 25\, 7:00 – 8:30 PM \n\n\n\nWorkshop fee: $25 \n\n\n\n\nRegister for Workshop

SUMMARY:Virtual Book Discussion w/Felicia & Chris
DESCRIPTION:Join a thoughtful book discussion online (later to be made into a podcast) with Chris Hickey (left) and Felicia Ryan (right)\n\n\n\nJoin a book discussion with Chris Hickey\, facilitator of the Malden Writer’s Collaborative\, and Felicia Ryan\, writer and host of the Hi Felicia! podcast. \n\n\n\n“Can it happen again? Are we doomed to repeat our history?” \n\n\n\nWriters love books because they give us windows into other worlds — some real or imaginary. These two writers will host a facilitated discussion of the 2023 Malden Read’s book selection “They Called Us Enemy” by George Takei. Together with the participants\, they will explore the many rich themes of family\, history\, and perspective done through a timeless black and white graphic novel.  \n\n\n\nWe will explore: \n\n\n\n\nHow is the graphic novel as a format a useful way of re-telling painful history or apocalyptic fiction?\n\n\n\n\n\nWe can ask the question “Why does history repeat?”\n\n\n\n\n\nWho is “They” and “Us” in this story? How does making someone the “other” de-humanize them?\n\n\n\n\n\nWhat effect does telling the story in black and white have on the reader?\n\n\n\n\n\nWhich character(s) do you most emphasize with? And why?\n\n\n\n\n\nWhat is a particularly poignant or moving scene you remember?\n\n\n\n\n\nDid you learn anything new from reading this story that you didn’t already know?\n\n\n\n\nThe discussion will be online via Zoom and recorded as a podcast as well. You must register in advance at this link. \n\n\n\nQuestions/comments can be submitted in advance for discussion by emailing maldenwriters@gmail.com

SUMMARY:Ongoing: Lines Connecting Lines Exhibit through June 1
DESCRIPTION:Lines Connecting Lines Exhibit Gives Images to Words \n\n\n\nStart with one work of art and allow it to grow and transform into a completely new piece of art in a different medium. It is not a unique idea\, but it is one that has proven inspirational time and again. In this case the original art was poems written by local poets that then inspired new works of visual art. The outcome of this collaboration is the exhibit “Lines Connecting Lines” at Gallery UMA (145 Pleasant Street\, Malden) opening Thursday\, April 7 and running through June 1. This exhibit is inspired in part by this year’s Malden Reads book selection “An American Sunrise\,” by Joy Harjo. It is hosted by Gallery UMA\, curated by Lisa L. Sears and co-organized with David Chia. \n\n\n\nThis project was supported\, in part\, by a grant from the Malden Cultural Council\, a local agency\, which is supported by the Massachusetts Cultural Council\, a state agency. \n\n\n\nImage above: Artwork detail from “Rebirth” by Ose Manheim\, Poem excerpt from “In New England’s February I Worry About What the Crocuses Will Tell Us” by Julia Lisella. \n\n\n\n“Lines Connecting Lines” runs April 7 – June 1\, 2022Gallery UMA is open to the public:Monday – Wednesday noon – 6:30 pmThursday noon – 8 pmFridays by appointment: 11am – 6 pm. SUMMARY:Book Discussion with Robin Fast
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a special book discussion on poetry\, history\, and healing\, featuring Malden resident & Emerson College emerita professor Robin Fast. An American Sunrise is infused with history. In interviews\, Joy Harjo has expressed the hope that her poems will be useful\, that they will contribute to healing and to love. We will start by looking at “My grandfather Monahwee” (page 5 in “An American Sunrise”)\, which draws on Muscogee history. We will then consider how some other poems address history and reflect Harjo’s interest in healing\, including “For Earth’s Grandsons” (page 56). Other poems will be discussed (time permitting!). \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nRegister Here

SUMMARY:Book Discussion with Mayor Gary Christensen
DESCRIPTION:The Malden Public Library is proud to host our annual Malden Reads Book Discussion with Malden Mayor Gary Christenson. The event will be held on Wednesday\, April 13th from 7–8 pm in the Ryder Gallery of the Converse Art Museum at Malden Public Library. Light refreshments will be available beforehand. \n\n\n\nThis year\, Malden Reads has selected a collection of poems for the first time ever. Our 2022 season book selection is An American Sunrise by Joy Harjo. For those who don’t prefer poetry\, we ask that you give this collection a chance. Poetry is meant to be heard\, absorbed\, and reflected on\, and we are all thrilled for the opportunity to do so. \n\n\n\nAn American Sunrise deals with loss\, memory\, and the nature of joy and hope. The collection also explores human rights and socio-political equity across American cultures and communities (which is especially relevant to our diverse city of Malden)\, the values of various indigenous peoples\, and the importance of our land and environment. \n\n\n\nOur book discussion this year will begin with one of the poems in the collection called For Those Who Would Govern. So join us for an evening of sharing poetry\, ideas\, art\, and joy of gathering with our neighbors.

SUMMARY:Courageous Poetry - A Poetry-Writing Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Urban Media Arts\, in collaboration with Malden Reads\, is pleased to offer this virtual poetry-writing workshop\, open to all members of the Malden community. Space is limited. The instructor and guide for the workshop is CD Collins\, an award-winning author\, poet\, and spoken-word artist. No former poetry-writing experience is necessary to participate in this workshop\, just an openness to experimenting with the art form.  \n\n\n\nThis is a 4-session workshop which meets at the following dates & times: \n\n\n\nTuesdays\, March 22\, 29\, April 5\, 12 | at 7:00-8:30pm \n\n\n\nPoetry is a natural place to turn during times of disruption and change\, a bridge to the inexpressible. This historical moment calls for such a bridge. What are you struggling with right now? What is a portal to joy for you? What is a source of strength? We each have our own form of courage and ways to navigate through our fears and goals.  \n\n\n\nUsing Joy Harjo’s poetry as inspiration (her book “An American Sunrise” is the Malden Reads 2022 selection)\, this workshop will explore themes of identity\, family history\, personal challenges\, and hope. \n\n\n\nAfter the completion of the workshop we will offer opportunities for the participants to share their poetry at one or more in-person events. The date\, time and nature of these events are still being determined. \n\n\n\nA commitment to all four sessions and a public presentation of one or more of your poems is expected. Though the workshop is free\, a donation to UMA – Urban Media Arts – is encouraged. \n\n\n\nThis workshop is partially funded through a grant from the Malden Cultural Council\, a local agency\, provided through the Massachusetts Cultural Council\, a state agency. \n\n\n\n\nRegister for this Workshop

SUMMARY:Workshop: Understanding Poetry
DESCRIPTION:Malden Reads is teaming up with the The Malden Writers’ Collaborative (TMWC) to offer a workshop on deepening your understanding and appreciation of poetry\, using excerpts and recorded performances of Joy Harjo’s poetry collection (and our Season 12 book selection)\, An American Sunrise. TMWC leaders and a panel of local poets will lead the workshop and facilitate discussions. Folks of all ages and identities are welcome. This workshop is digital (via Zoom) and completely open to the public. \n\n\n\nA message from TMWC about this workshop: \n\n\n\nPoetry is important because it reflects the world around us. It can be raps or lyrics\, music\, paintings\, hymns\, odes\, dances\, or other forms of storytelling. All cultural and historical groups around the world and throughout history have some form of poetry — Vikings had sagas\, Ancient Greeks had odes\, Christians had psalms. Poetry has been used by all peoples for tribute and storytelling. We’re pleased to share our love of reading and writing with the larger public through this workshop and excited to read some poetry together! \n\n\n\nTo register\, please sign up here and you will receive a confirmation email containing information about the meeting. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nEvent Organizer\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThe Malden Writers Collaborative is a local writers group that offers writing prompts and workshops for members. They meet twice monthly from September to June at the Malden Public Library and end each season with a public reading of members’ work in June. If you’re interested in joining\, please email maldenwriters@gmail.com to inquire about membership and meeting dates.

SUMMARY:Film Screening: Bounty
DESCRIPTION:Tune in for a special showing of the Upstander Project’s short-film documentary Bounty.\n\n\n\nThe film screening is preceded by a short introduction and followed by a short Q&A with the filmmakers. This event is free\, virtual\, and live-streamed. Instructions for streaming will be sent after registration. For further details\, check out the FAQ about how to stream the screening at the bottom of the registration page. \n\n\n\nA synopsis from the filmmakers: \n\n\n\nWe are citizens of the Penobscot Nation. For this film\, we bring our families to Boston to read our ancestors’ death warrant. This abhorrent proclamation\, made in 1755 by the colonial government\, paid settlers handsomely to murder Penobscot people. It declared our people enemies and offered different prices for the scalps of children\, women\, and men. Bounty proclamations like this\, some even paid in stolen land\, persisted for more than two centuries across what is now the United States. The memory of being hunted is in our blood. We know this to be true\, and the science now affirms that trauma can be passed down from generation to generation. In BOUNTY we step into the future together with our children into the colonizer’s hall of injustice\, to read their hateful words and tell the truth about what was done to our ancestors. We exercise our power by sharing the horrors of this hard history as an act of resistance\, remembrance\, and a step toward justice. \n\n\n\nTo register\, visit here or click the button below. \n\n\n\n\nRegister for the Screening\n\n\n\n\nWatch the Trailer\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nEvent Organizer

SUMMARY:Story Time: April Vacation
DESCRIPTION:• April 19-22 • A different adventure every day!\n\n\n\nStory Time • Kids Yoga • Crafts • Songs \n\n\n\nFamilies are invited to join us for an interactive story time program over April vacation week! The program will be held outside\, with children sitting distanced from each other to meet public health and safety protocols. The planned location will be at the Ed Emberley mural at FitzGerald Park (the Exchange Street side of the CBD garage)\, and if there is rain\, the group will meet at the alcove at the Malden City Hall plaza on Pleasant Street. The program will be held Monday–Thursday of school vacation week (April 19–22)\, from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m.\, with different stories and activities each day. The program is most appropriate for preschool-aged children\, though all are welcome.  \n\n\n\nChildren will have the opportunity to hear books and original stories\, learn yoga movements\, sing songs\, and participate in arts & crafts activities related to the stories\, promoting social-emotional learning and sensory experiences.  \n\n\n\nThe team leading the program includes Linda Zalk\, preschool educator and special educator\, who will be reading the stories\, including her original stories about Happy the Hamster.
