SUMMARY:Book Discussion with Robin Fast
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a special book discussion on poetry\, history\, and healing\, featuring Malden resident & Emerson College emerita professor Robin Fast. An American Sunrise is infused with history. In interviews\, Joy Harjo has expressed the hope that her poems will be useful\, that they will contribute to healing and to love. We will start by looking at “My grandfather Monahwee” (page 5 in “An American Sunrise”)\, which draws on Muscogee history. We will then consider how some other poems address history and reflect Harjo’s interest in healing\, including “For Earth’s Grandsons” (page 56). Other poems will be discussed (time permitting!). \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nRegister Here

SUMMARY:Book Discussion with Mayor Gary Christensen
DESCRIPTION:The Malden Public Library is proud to host our annual Malden Reads Book Discussion with Malden Mayor Gary Christenson. The event will be held on Wednesday\, April 13th from 7–8 pm in the Ryder Gallery of the Converse Art Museum at Malden Public Library. Light refreshments will be available beforehand. \n\n\n\nThis year\, Malden Reads has selected a collection of poems for the first time ever. Our 2022 season book selection is An American Sunrise by Joy Harjo. For those who don’t prefer poetry\, we ask that you give this collection a chance. Poetry is meant to be heard\, absorbed\, and reflected on\, and we are all thrilled for the opportunity to do so. \n\n\n\nAn American Sunrise deals with loss\, memory\, and the nature of joy and hope. The collection also explores human rights and socio-political equity across American cultures and communities (which is especially relevant to our diverse city of Malden)\, the values of various indigenous peoples\, and the importance of our land and environment. \n\n\n\nOur book discussion this year will begin with one of the poems in the collection called For Those Who Would Govern. So join us for an evening of sharing poetry\, ideas\, art\, and joy of gathering with our neighbors.

SUMMARY:Courageous Poetry - A Poetry-Writing Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Urban Media Arts\, in collaboration with Malden Reads\, is pleased to offer this virtual poetry-writing workshop\, open to all members of the Malden community. Space is limited. The instructor and guide for the workshop is CD Collins\, an award-winning author\, poet\, and spoken-word artist. No former poetry-writing experience is necessary to participate in this workshop\, just an openness to experimenting with the art form.  \n\n\n\nThis is a 4-session workshop which meets at the following dates & times: \n\n\n\nTuesdays\, March 22\, 29\, April 5\, 12 | at 7:00-8:30pm \n\n\n\nPoetry is a natural place to turn during times of disruption and change\, a bridge to the inexpressible. This historical moment calls for such a bridge. What are you struggling with right now? What is a portal to joy for you? What is a source of strength? We each have our own form of courage and ways to navigate through our fears and goals.  \n\n\n\nUsing Joy Harjo’s poetry as inspiration (her book “An American Sunrise” is the Malden Reads 2022 selection)\, this workshop will explore themes of identity\, family history\, personal challenges\, and hope. \n\n\n\nAfter the completion of the workshop we will offer opportunities for the participants to share their poetry at one or more in-person events. The date\, time and nature of these events are still being determined. \n\n\n\nA commitment to all four sessions and a public presentation of one or more of your poems is expected. Though the workshop is free\, a donation to UMA – Urban Media Arts – is encouraged. \n\n\n\nThis workshop is partially funded through a grant from the Malden Cultural Council\, a local agency\, provided through the Massachusetts Cultural Council\, a state agency. \n\n\n\n\nRegister for this Workshop

SUMMARY:Workshop: Understanding Poetry
DESCRIPTION:Malden Reads is teaming up with the The Malden Writers’ Collaborative (TMWC) to offer a workshop on deepening your understanding and appreciation of poetry\, using excerpts and recorded performances of Joy Harjo’s poetry collection (and our Season 12 book selection)\, An American Sunrise. TMWC leaders and a panel of local poets will lead the workshop and facilitate discussions. Folks of all ages and identities are welcome. This workshop is digital (via Zoom) and completely open to the public. \n\n\n\nA message from TMWC about this workshop: \n\n\n\nPoetry is important because it reflects the world around us. It can be raps or lyrics\, music\, paintings\, hymns\, odes\, dances\, or other forms of storytelling. All cultural and historical groups around the world and throughout history have some form of poetry — Vikings had sagas\, Ancient Greeks had odes\, Christians had psalms. Poetry has been used by all peoples for tribute and storytelling. We’re pleased to share our love of reading and writing with the larger public through this workshop and excited to read some poetry together! \n\n\n\nTo register\, please sign up here and you will receive a confirmation email containing information about the meeting. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nEvent Organizer\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThe Malden Writers Collaborative is a local writers group that offers writing prompts and workshops for members. They meet twice monthly from September to June at the Malden Public Library and end each season with a public reading of members’ work in June. If you’re interested in joining\, please email maldenwriters@gmail.com to inquire about membership and meeting dates.

SUMMARY:Film Screening: Bounty
DESCRIPTION:Tune in for a special showing of the Upstander Project’s short-film documentary Bounty.\n\n\n\nThe film screening is preceded by a short introduction and followed by a short Q&A with the filmmakers. This event is free\, virtual\, and live-streamed. Instructions for streaming will be sent after registration. For further details\, check out the FAQ about how to stream the screening at the bottom of the registration page. \n\n\n\nA synopsis from the filmmakers: \n\n\n\nWe are citizens of the Penobscot Nation. For this film\, we bring our families to Boston to read our ancestors’ death warrant. This abhorrent proclamation\, made in 1755 by the colonial government\, paid settlers handsomely to murder Penobscot people. It declared our people enemies and offered different prices for the scalps of children\, women\, and men. Bounty proclamations like this\, some even paid in stolen land\, persisted for more than two centuries across what is now the United States. The memory of being hunted is in our blood. We know this to be true\, and the science now affirms that trauma can be passed down from generation to generation. In BOUNTY we step into the future together with our children into the colonizer’s hall of injustice\, to read their hateful words and tell the truth about what was done to our ancestors. We exercise our power by sharing the horrors of this hard history as an act of resistance\, remembrance\, and a step toward justice. \n\n\n\nTo register\, visit here or click the button below. \n\n\n\n\nRegister for the Screening\n\n\n\n\nWatch the Trailer\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nEvent Organizer

SUMMARY:Workshop: Unlearn to Relearn - Breaking Down Systemic Racism
DESCRIPTION:As part of the Malden Reads 2021 program\, Malden Reads is collaborating with Malden Community Organizing for Racial Equity (MaldenCORE) and the City of Malden to host a free 4-part-virtual workshop about unpacking systemic racism in the United States. \nWorkshop participants will be asked to read and reflect on the book “Me and White Supremacy: Combat Racism\, Change the World\, and Become a Good Ancestor” by Layla F. Saad. The book is divided into 28 short chapters with reflection questions at the end of each chapter. In the chapters\, Saad discusses her lived experiences of racism as a result of her intersectional identities and the ways readers can dismantle forms of oppression toward communities of color. \nThe 4-part workshop will be led by Bwann Kellie Gwann\, Assistant Director of the Urban Scholars Initiative at Lesley University. The workshop will help participants who are actively reading the book gain a deeper understanding of systemic racism in the United States through dialogue\, case study review\, and small group activities. There will be four 90-minute workshop session from 7-8:30 pm over Zoom on: \n-Thursday\, March 11th-Thursday\, March 25th -Thursday\, April 15th-Thursday\, April 29th \nThe workshop will cover many topics\, including how Black\, Indigenous\, and People of Color (BIPOC) communities in the United States have been historically oppressed and different racial groups’ roles in dismantling white supremacy. The book is primarily framed as a learning experience for white people and people of color with light complexion. However\, people of all racial\, ethnic\, and cultural backgrounds are also encouraged to participate in and apply for the workshop. \nThis workshop is available only to people who live or work in Malden\, are involved in a Malden organization\, or have some other connection to the Malden community. The workshop is most appropriate for adults and mature high school students. The workshop will be held in English. \nParticipants will be asked to attend all four workshop sessions and actively engage in the reading. Participants will likely need 1-3 hours each week from March 4 through April 29 to read and journal about the assigned chapters in “Me and White Supremacy.” \nMalden Public Library carries physical copies and has downloadable e-book and audiobook options available through Overdrive here. \nRegistration for this workshop has closed.

SUMMARY:Mass Memories Road Show
DESCRIPTION:As a member of the Malden community (past or present)\, YOU are invited to be part of the Malden Mass. Memories Road Show is a public history project that digitizes and archives personal photographs and stories shared by the people of Massachusetts.  \nThis event-based\, participatory program is coordinated through the Joseph P. Healey Library at UMass Boston in collaboration with local planning groups in communities throughout the Commonwealth. \nSince its launch in 2004\, the Mass. Memories Road Show has digitized more than 12\,000 photographs and stories from across the state\, creating an educational resource of primary sources for future generations. You can view that archive here. \n\n\nHOW TO PARTICIPATE\n\n\n\n\nHelp spread the word! Bring your family\, friends\, neighbors\, community groups\, constituents\, clients and customers. They can be hard copy or digital.  \nAt the event\, you will have the opportunity to share the story behind the photo and have your memories recorded for Malden’s historical archive. \nThere will be other things to see and do at this community event. Malden Reads and Urban Media Arts are planning special activities that celebrate the stories of our community. The event will also celebrate the 375th anniversary of the city of Malden through fun activities\, presentations and exhibits. \nWhether you are a newcomer to the city or have lived here all your life\, YOUR story is important to our community’s evolving history. \nHOW TO HELP\nIf you represent a community organization\, please help spread the word! \nYou can also sign up to volunteer for the event by emailing Malden Reads committee member Karen Phillips at karenjphillips1@gmail.com.   \n\n\nFor more information and updates about this event\, visit our main Malden Mass.
